Scrutiny and Controversies Surround Graham Platner’s Candidacy

4 weeks ago 0

The upcoming primary election finds Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner under increasing scrutiny. Republican senators criticize his candidacy, while many Democrats avoid public support.

Some Senate Democrats hesitate to defend Platner amid emerging allegations and controversies. These issues arise just days before the primary, sparking debate.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, expressed his concerns, stating, “I think it is really sad when you have someone who’s a self-described communist, who put a Nazi tattoo on himself.” He criticized Democratic support for Platner.

When questioned about their support for Platner, some Democratic senators refrained from commenting. Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., responded, “Who told you I was supporting him?” Warnock added, “I don’t vote in that state.”

Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, commented, “The people of Maine are going to have to make up their minds.” Other Democrats admitted they hadn’t focused much on the Maine election. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., mentioned, “I’m gonna take a look at the race.” Meanwhile, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., acknowledged, “I have a few other things on my mind.”

As the primary approaches, allegations against Platner continue to emerge. These include past sexting scandals, mocking a wounded soldier, and inappropriate Reddit posts. Furthermore, claims from his ex-girlfriends have surfaced, accusing Platner of misogynistic behavior and acknowledging a controversial tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol.

Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., urged Maine voters to make a discerning choice. “I think it’s going to be interesting to see if the voters of Maine are able to see through the lies that Graham Platner is planting,” Hagerty stated, questioning Platner’s behavior as “unconscionable.”

Despite the controversies, Platner leads the Democratic primary polls. Notably, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., continue to support him. Democrats view Maine’s Senate seat as a strategic opportunity in the midterm elections.

If Platner secures the nomination, he will challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November. Sen. Collins, known for her dedicated representation of Maine, is expected to present a formidable election battle.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., criticized Platner’s candidacy, commenting, “This Platner guy can’t beat Susan Collins, number one,” adding that his participation is “embarrassing…for Maine and for our country.”
