President Donald Trump has appointed Bill Pulte as the incoming Acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI). Trump expressed his desire for Pulte to initiate the process of firing certain intelligence officials. This information was shared in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
Pulte is set to replace Tulsi Gabbard, the current DNI, who resigned in May due to her husband’s cancer diagnosis. His official takeover is scheduled for June 30. Pulte’s assignment involves downsizing staff across the 18 intelligence agencies overseen by the DNI.
Trump elaborated in the interview, “I’d like to see it smaller. I think there are a lot of people in there that shouldn’t be there.” The president aims to streamline the intelligence community.
Bill Pulte presently serves as Trump’s Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. His selection has stirred discontent among lawmakers, notably former Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. Thune criticized the choice, stating, “We don’t need a weaponized DNI. We need professionals there.”
“You’re less shackled,” Trump explained regarding Pulte’s outsider status, suggesting that it empowers him temporarily.
Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump assured that Pulte’s interim role provides flexibility. A search for a permanent replacement continues, while Pulte is expected to enact changes.
Trump remarked, “Frankly, it might be good for him to shake it up before people come. He can do a lot of the hard work…” The president emphasized the benefit of Pulte’s temporary position.
Pulte chairs the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac government-sponsored entities (GSEs). His influence extends to legislative outcomes. For instance, a recent Senate vote blocked reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., noted opposition tied to Pulte’s leadership.
Warner commented, “I don’t see how you get the necessary Democrat votes… that would get them to 60.”
