McDonald’s Employee Injured in Hot Oil Attack

A serious incident occurred at a McDonald’s in Yuba City, California, resulting in significant injuries to a young employee. Jacob Smith, aged 20, suffered facial, neck, arm, and back burns after a colleague allegedly threw hot oil on him. The event took place on May 30. Smith remains hospitalized at the UC Davis ICU burn unit.

Jacob’s mother, Amber Smith, recounted the attack to NBC affiliate KCRA, explaining that Jacob was preparing to conclude his shift and manage the day’s earnings when he was unexpectedly attacked. “He was in the office getting ready to count the money when he saw out of the corner of his eye something, and he turned, and the oil was just thrown on him,” she stated.

The Yuba City police have identified the suspect as Jalani Bluett, aged 23. After allegedly fleeing the restaurant, Bluett was arrested on May 31 by Sutter County deputies. He faces several charges, including felony battery with serious bodily injury, felony mayhem, and felony assault with a deadly weapon. Bluett has entered a plea of not guilty.

Unclear is what prompted this attack. Jalani Bluett’s public defender has not provided a comment regarding the situation. Following the incident, John Cook, the owner and operator of the McDonald’s, confirmed Bluett’s dismissal. In a statement, Cook expressed the organization’s concern, saying, “The serious incident that took place at our restaurant … is deeply concerning, and our focus is on supporting our employee, Jacob, as he recovers. The safety and well-being of our employees, guests, and community remain our top priority.”

Amber Smith revealed to KCRA that Jacob’s injuries include severe burns on one side of his face, extending down his neck, right arm, and back. He is experiencing intense pain, and doctors are aiming to reduce the size of the burns to minimize the need for extensive skin grafts.
