A magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred off the northwest coast of Cuba, leading to reports of light shaking in parts of Florida on Monday afternoon, including South Florida. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) noted that the earthquake struck approximately 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, which lies to the west of Havana.
“Shaking from the recent M6.1 earthquake offshore of Cuba was felt in Florida, where earthquakes are not commonly felt,” USGS posted. “Did you feel it? (If you’re in the area and did not feel it, that’s data too!),” they further explained. This highlights the unusual nature of seismic activity in Florida.
Florida residents from Tampa, Orlando, and as far south as Miami reported experiencing the tremors. The City of Miami recognized the event, stating, “The City of Miami is aware of a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that occurred off the coast of Cuba. Resulting seismic activity was reportedly felt in several areas throughout the city, prompting multiple calls for service.” Miami Fire-Rescue attended to each reported incident, reassuring the public that there were no major injuries or property damage reported.
Following the earthquake, the National Weather Service office in Miami assured residents that there was no tsunami threat in South Florida. They did not release any additional information.
Previous Earthquake Effects in Florida
While it is unusual, Florida has experienced shaking from powerful earthquakes in the region before. For instance, in January 2020, a major magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica. This event also resulted in shaking being felt in Miami and other parts of South Florida. A resident at the time described feeling like “light-headed” motion while at their desk in Aventura, indicating how significant the seismic activity felt in the area.
