Trump’s NBA Finals Attendance Heightens Security Measures at Madison Square Garden

Donald Trump will be the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game, necessitating enhanced security measures at Madison Square Garden. Fans face a tight security perimeter, leading to long waits to enter.

Security preparations began early, with the New York Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service setting up barriers around the arena more than four hours before the game between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. This transformed the area into a scene comparable to Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

Fans are advised to arrive two hours before tipoff to accommodate airport-level security checks. Attendees must show a ticket or pass multiple checkpoints and pass through a magnetometer. No bags are allowed into the arena, with a large line forming even before doors opened.

Trump’s presence has led to the cancellation of a watch party outside the arena. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed plans to reinstate the watch party for Game 4 and acknowledged New Yorkers’ familiarity with presidential visits imposing area lockdowns.

The security measures are comparable to those seen at major sporting events during Trump’s term, causing challenges for fans. For example, at a previous U.S. Open, fans faced significant delays due to layered security screenings.

Knicks center Mitchell Robinson expressed indifference, stating the team would play regardless of the attendees. Meanwhile, Knicks fans grapple with high ticket prices; the lowest ticket price exceeds $5,000, driving fans to nearby bars and streets to watch the game. Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured a standing-room ticket for about $1,000.

The security perimeter forced relocation of the watch party a few blocks away to Bryant Park. Knicks guard Jose Alvarado, a native New Yorker, emphasized their adaptability in finding ways to view the game.
