3 weeks ago 0

For the first time in NBA Finals history, a sitting U.S. president attended the game. President Donald J. Trump watched as the New York Knicks lost a playoff game for the first time in the series against the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks, after winning 13 consecutive games, fell 115-111 at Madison Square Garden with Trump present in the audience.

Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs with 32 points, helping to secure their first victory in the series. Understanding the difficulties of overcoming a 3-0 deficit, the Spurs took advantage. They now trail 2-1 with Game 4 scheduled at the Garden.

It was the first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden since 1999, and the Knicks have not won a championship since 1973. Wembanyama had his best performance in the series, shooting 11 of 18, adding eight rebounds, six assists, and three blocks. Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper contributed significantly, helping the Spurs take the win.

For the Knicks, Jalen Brunson scored 32 points, and OG Anunoby added 28 points. Jordan Clarkson, who sat out of Game 2, scored 10 points off the bench. Karl-Anthony Towns struggled, shooting 4 of 10 and contributing 11 points.

President Trump’s appearance generated mixed reactions, with boos from the home crowd when displayed on the video board. This was soon replaced with a focus on Brunson as the Knicks recovered from a slow start.

Spurs’ Strategy and Adjustments

The Spurs led 33-22 after the first quarter but saw their lead shrink by halftime. The Knicks, led by Anunoby and Brunson, overtook the Spurs, leading 64-57 by halftime. However, the Spurs regained control in the third quarter and clung to a slim lead into the fourth.

Focused adjustments allowed the Spurs to forge a victory. Key plays and precise free throws, particularly from Castle, were pivotal. They maintained composure until the end, keeping the series competitive.

Knicks’ Turnovers and Challenges

The Knicks struggled with turnovers, committing 13, which led to 21 Spurs points. In contrast, San Antonio had fewer turnovers and limited their impact. Brunson’s turnovers were especially troublesome, as he averaged 4.3 per game in the series. Uncharacteristic mistakes hampered the Knicks, and they must adjust to the Spurs’ dynamic defense in Game 4.

Atmosphere and Audience Impact

The atmosphere was electric at Madison Square Garden, despite logistical challenges posed by Trump’s visit. This event marked the first finals game at the Garden in decades, drawing massive local support. Ticket prices reached as high as $3,800, with passionate Knicks fans in attendance.

The Knicks still have an opportunity to adjust and continue their series lead. As they prepare for Game 4, they aim to correct their mistakes and respond to the Spurs’ challenge.
