The initial praise for New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns has faded swiftly in the wake of the NBA Finals. The Knicks experienced their first defeat in 46 days, losing Game 3 to the San Antonio Spurs. Towns is now under scrutiny for his poor performance in crucial moments, particularly in the fourth quarter.
Statistics reveal a concerning trend. According to @NBAcrazystats on X, Towns has failed to score in the fourth quarter of the three NBA Finals games played so far. While he has accumulated 50 points over the first three quarters of these games, he has not added to his tally in the last quarter.
Towns has spent more time on the court in the fourth quarter than any of his teammates. He has played 29.1 minutes during this period, slightly more than guard Jalen Brunson, who has clocked 26.9 minutes. Unlike Towns, Brunson has managed to score 32 points in the fourth quarter throughout the series.
At the beginning of the series, Towns received praise for his performance against Spurs’ star Victor Wembanyama. However, the situation turned after Game 3, as Wembanyama scored a game-high 32 points compared to Towns’ 11.
“There were times that offense did struggle because he didn’t want the ball,” said ESPN’s Alan Hahn on Get Up.
With Game 4 approaching, the Knicks need significant contributions from their 30-year-old center. Failing to do so may risk squandering their initial 2-0 series advantage, leading to a disappointing Finals loss.
