Controversy Surrounds Yearbook Dedication for Rhode Island Teacher

3 weeks ago 0

A Rhode Island high school recently faced renewed criticism after honoring a teacher in the class of 2026 yearbook. The educator, Benjamin Fillo, had previously drawn outrage for comments about the late Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA.

After Kirk’s assassination on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University in Utah, Fillo referred to Kirk as “garbage” in a video. Fillo claimed Kirk had negative views on LGBTQ rights and women’s rights. These remarks were widely shared online, leading to his suspension. However, he returned to teaching on December 1, according to Bob Mitchell, interim Superintendent of Barrington Public Schools.

The yearbook dedication praised Fillo’s enthusiasm and dedication as a teacher. It stated, “Any student at BHS who has the opportunity to learn from you should consider themselves fortunate.” It also included a light-hearted comment on his sense of fashion. The dedication was attributed to students Karthik and Nachi on behalf of the 2026 senior class.

The Barrington Public Schools spokesperson stated that the dedication was chosen by the senior class as part of their yearbook production. The spokesperson emphasized celebrating the achievements and growth of their students while recognizing the conclusion of a successful school year.

Heather and Jarrod Ryan, parents of a student at Barrington High School, expressed disappointment over the recognition of Fillo. They noted that his comments promoted political violence and did not align with the community’s values. They suggested that the retiring vice principal would have been a more suitable choice for the dedication due to the vice principal’s long-term contributions and respect within the community.

The incident involving Kirk, who was fatally shot by suspect Tyler Robinson on September 10, has stirred discussions about political violence. Robinson, who appeared in court via video on September 16, has not been seen since.

Fillo did not respond to requests for comment, and the situation has drawn attention from Fox News Digital. Further story tips regarding the matter can be sent to Rachel Del Guidice at Fox News Digital.
