Oil Flow Through Strait of Hormuz Expected to Increase

3 weeks ago 0

Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced the expectation for the amount of oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz to rise, amidst ongoing efforts by the U.S. and Iran to resolve their prolonged conflict. During an Atlantic Council event, Wright highlighted that traffic through this crucial oil shipping chokepoint is growing significantly, and he anticipates continued growth in oil exports through the strait.

On Tuesday, oil prices experienced a decline as the Trump administration expressed confidence about the volume of oil traversing the strait. U.S. Benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was trading at approximately $88 per barrel, compared to nearly $95 per barrel the previous day. Meanwhile, Brent crude, the international benchmark, was priced at about $92 per barrel after hitting almost $98 the day before. President Trump echoed these sentiments on Monday night, noting the substantial oil flow through the Hormuz Strait and the relatively moderate prices.

MarineTraffic analysis reported that as of Monday, traffic through the strait was at historically low levels, though there were five confirmed crossings.

In related news, a recent poll indicates that nearly 60% of U.S. adults anticipate worsening gas prices over the coming year, as the Iran conflict continues to impact energy markets. Additionally, there is heightened concern over the spread of the New World screwworm, with new cases confirmed and efforts underway to control the parasite.

Upcoming events include Energy Secretary Chris Wright’s scheduled appearance before the House Science, Space and Technology Committee to discuss the Department of Energy’s budget. The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee also have hearings planned on various issues, including the Fish and Wildlife Service budget and the Colorado River Basin oversight.
