Throughout Mount Carmel’s playoff journey to return to state for the first time in 11 years, Mario Medina has exhibited steady leadership behind the plate. The senior catcher maintains composure and keeps the team focused, prioritizing the return to state with his teammates as his utmost goal. “It was a big game and a special moment,” Medina expressed. “I’ve been with these guys for four years; they are like my brothers. There is nowhere else I’d want to be.”
During the Friday night semifinal game, Medina contributed significantly, securing one of the Caravan’s three hits and executing a crucial defensive play with a tag at the plate. Despite his efforts, Mount Carmel fell short against defending Class 4A champion Libertyville, losing 3-1 at Slammers Stadium in Joliet.
Connor Elenteny, committed to Notre Dame, demonstrated skill by striking out five over six innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits. Meanwhile, Illinois commit Joey Ireland doubled and earned an RBI walk, with Triton recruit Logan Fernandez adding a base hit.
The Caravan, now with a 30-11 record, fought tenaciously throughout the game. Trailing 3-0 in the seventh inning, they rallied with three walks and a hit-by-pitch on Pancho Vazquez, who later scored. With bases loaded, Aksel McKnight secured victory for Libertyville by getting Fernandez to fly out to center field, ending the game.
Joey Ireland noted, “We’ve got to find a way,” when reflecting on the game. “We almost succeeded there at the end. I was proud of the guys. We fought all year. That was our spirit throughout the season; we just came up short.”
Medina, alongside senior right fielder Haiden Lajcin, executed a key defensive play in the third inning. With runners on second and third and two outs, Lajcin caught a fly ball and delivered an accurate throw to home where Medina caught it, applying the tag on Braden Tolzien just before he touched home plate. This maintained Mount Carmel’s deficit at 3-0.
Reflecting on the play, Medina recounted, “I saw the ball and thought, ‘Four, four, four.’ The throw was perfect; I just had to dive for the tag. It felt like a crucial momentum shift.”
Coach Brian Hurry praised the play, stating, “That was an unreal play by Haiden and Mario— a remarkable throw and tag.”
Medina has consistently executed such plays while guiding a successful pitching staff. He stated, “I’ve tried to step up as a leader this year. I don’t know if they felt it, but that’s what I aimed to do.”
Elenteny affirmed Medina’s leadership impact, noting, “He’s the best you can get. He doesn’t talk much but he’s the biggest leader on the field. There’s nobody else I’d prefer to pitch to.”
Mount Carmel’s seniors, many of whom have played on varsity for three to four years, will have one more game together on Saturday. Coach Hurry acknowledged their impact, stating, “They’ve made their mark on a program rich in tradition and pride. Over the last three or four years, the memories created with these guys are invaluable.”
