The European Union has enacted sanctions against over 80 individuals and entities connected to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Among those targeted is Orthodox priest Georgiy Shevkunov, known as Metropolitan Tikhon. The EU has indicated that Shevkunov was involved in disseminating Russian propaganda to justify the invasion.
Commonly regarded in Russian media as President Vladimir Putin’s personal priest and confessor, a title he neither acknowledges nor refutes, Shevkunov holds the title of Metropolitan of Crimea. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, with Shevkunov’s appointment coming in 2023.
The sanctions list approved by EU countries includes 34 individuals and 47 entities. EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, stated that these measures aim to increase pressure on Russia to terminate the conflict. The sanctions focus on Russia’s military-industrial operations, rogue fleets, and networks responsible for hybrid attacks on Europe.
Proponents of Western sanctions claim a significant economic impact on Russia, exceeding $1 trillion, according to Kallas. She emphasized efforts to undermine the foundations of Russia’s war economy.
The sanctions affect people and organizations tied to the production and distribution of drones and other military assets. Individuals accused of promoting Russian propaganda, such as influencer Alexandra Jost, and those facilitating war funding via oil trade are among those targeted.
In addition, 15 people involved in the alleged poisoning of the deceased opposition leader Alexei Navalny face sanctions, including asset freezes, travel bans, and financial prohibitions.
On the same day, Russian missile attacks on several Ukrainian cities resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals and damage to a significant Orthodox monastery. In reaction, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged for increased pressure on Moscow during a G7 summit in France.
Russia’s invasion in February 2022 has resulted in Europe’s most severe conflict since World War II, with extensive civilian casualties and substantial military losses.
