The Uruguay men’s soccer team experienced travel and security challenges upon arriving in Miami for their opening match at the FIFA World Cup. Their journey faced a significant delay due to paperwork issues during their flight from Mexico to the United States.
A video circulated on social media on Monday depicting the team stopped outside their bus as players prepared to face Saudi Arabia at Miami Stadium. Security officers and sniffer dogs were seen inspecting their luggage. While some players appeared relaxed and smiling, others like Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte seemed more serious.
The exact location and timing of the video were unclear, but recognizable players, including the blue-haired Ronald Araújo, were present. They wore outfits identical to those broadcast before the match. Newsweek reached out to the Uruguayan Football Association to comment on the travel delays and security check.
Uruguay drew 1-1 against Saudi Arabia, but the journey to the U.S. had been fraught with challenges. The team was scheduled to fly from Cancún, near their training base in Playa del Carmen, to Fort Lauderdale on Sunday afternoon. The departure was abruptly stopped because the FIFA-arranged flight lacked necessary paperwork, causing the players to remain in Mexico. Their replacement flight also faced delays.
A team spokesperson informed The Athletic that FIFA was responsible for the delay, although FIFA attributed the issue to an “airline permitting issue.” In a statement, FIFA clarified, “Due to an airline permitting error in Mexico, the Uruguay national team’s departure from Cancun to Miami was delayed. The airline has apologized for the inconvenience caused.” FIFA stated they maintained close contact with the Uruguay team and worked with airport and operational partners to speed up the process and minimize travel disruptions.
This situation is still unfolding. More updates will follow as they become available.
