A mother’s vigilance led to the thwarting of an alleged attack plot targeting a UFC event at the White House. The incident involved a 19-year-old Ohio resident, Tycen Proper, who was reportedly planning an attack at the UFC Freedom 250 event on the White House South Lawn.
Mother’s Concern and Investigation
The plot came to light when Proper’s mother observed his growing fascination with firearms and tactical gear. Alarmed by his secretive online engagements, she reached out to the authorities. Court documents revealed that Proper was part of a group intending to execute an attack using explosive-laden drones and sniper positions.
One major red flag arose when Proper’s mother noticed him researching areas near Washington, D.C. She observed him receiving maps and images through text messages and the platform Discord. When questioned about his activities, Proper allegedly described his plans as “recon” missions, which his mother interpreted as potential shootings.
Authorities Informed
On June 10, Proper’s mother contacted law enforcement due to concerns over her son’s recent firearm acquisitions and his communications with online acquaintances. Upon responding, deputies learned from Proper’s father that his son had formed online connections and was preparing “recon” missions with his new contacts. Plans to join the group during the weekend of June 13 were underway.
Further investigations revealed that Proper had acquired firearms, body armor, and tactical gear, spending approximately $3,000. The family voluntarily surrendered these items to law enforcement. Conversations with online group members who portrayed themselves as former military and Christian-based appeared to be influencing Proper. His focus on physical and tactical training had also intensified.
FBI Involvement and Arrest
Local authorities alerted the FBI, and a review of Proper’s communications revealed discussions of attack plans involving explosive drones and strategic sniper placements during the June 14 UFC event. Prosecutors stated that Proper confessed to participating in these planning conversations.
Retired FBI agent Jason Pack emphasized the critical role of family awareness in preventing such attacks. He stated that the initial breakthrough in the investigation stemmed from the mother recognizing and reporting her son’s concerning behavior.
Recognition of Courage
Rob Chadwick, a retired FBI supervisory agent, commended the mother’s bravery in reporting her son, acknowledging the difficulty of her decision. He highlighted the necessity of vigilance in today’s climate of political violence, noting the courage required to take action in such situations.
The case illustrates the crucial impact family members can have in recognizing and reporting suspicious behavior, ultimately aiding law enforcement in preventing potential violence.
