Texas Longhorns Prepare for Crucial 2026 Football Season

2 weeks ago 0

Texas Longhorns’ Season Overview

The Texas Longhorns ended their regular season on a high note, defeating then-No. 3 Texas A&M 27-17 on November 28. Still, losses to Ohio State, Florida, and Georgia prevented them from entering the College Football Playoff during quarterback Arch Manning’s debut season as a starter. In the offseason, Texas aggressively pursued enhancements via the transfer portal, providing Manning with a top-tier wide receiver, Cam Coleman, along with improvements to the offensive line, and a potent running back, Hollywood Smothers. As they approach the 2026 campaign, Texas stands as a favorite to vie for the national championship. Similar to last year, their schedule presents significant challenges.

Key Games of the 2026 Campaign

Ohio State at Texas (Sept. 12)

Ohio State’s defense tested Manning in 2025 when the Buckeyes triumphed over Texas 14-7 at Ohio Stadium. This time, the matchup takes place in Austin, with Texas anticipated to showcase a more robust team. As both teams eye a College Football Playoff spot, Texas needs to secure a victory, especially with a rigorous SEC schedule ahead. Defensive coordinator Will Muschamp faces the task of neutralizing Jeremiah Smith, one of college football’s most outstanding players.

Texas at LSU (Nov. 14)

While Georgia won’t be on Texas’ schedule in mid-November, they’ll face a formidable LSU team. Under new head coach Lane Kiffin, the Tigers are equipped with ample resources and have their sights set on a CFP berth. New LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt previously faced Texas in the CFP while at Arizona State in 2024, recording 222 passing yards, one interception, and an additional 60 rushing yards in Texas’ 39-31 double-overtime victory during the CFP quarterfinal at the Peach Bowl. With improved talent surrounding him at LSU, this late-season game carries weight for both the SEC championship and CFP dynamics.

Texas at Texas A&M (Nov. 27)

Texas has emerged victorious in the last three encounters versus Texas A&M, including a surprise win against the unbeaten Aggies last season. Texas A&M, with quarterback Marcel Reed leading, aims for CFP contention. Reed had difficulties against Texas’ defense last year, managing 180 passing yards with two interceptions in their defeat. The anticipated matchup in College Station holds crucial implications. Winning against their fierce rival at Kyle Field could decide if Texas gains a CFP bye or must travel in the initial round.
