In Arlington, Texas, England secured a 4-2 victory over Croatia. Harry Kane’s two goals matched the English record for World Cup goals. Jude Bellingham, just two minutes into the second half, added to the score.
The match replayed the intense 2018 World Cup semifinal, previously won by Croatia. In this encounter, Martin Baturina and Petar Musa each countered Kane’s first-half strikes. Musa scored right before the halftime whistle, leaving both teams level at the break.
However, Bellingham quickly shifted the dynamics. Receiving a long pass, he evaded defenders and placed a shot past Croatia’s Dominik Livakovic, hitting the far post. Marcus Rashford later sealed England’s two-goal advantage in the 85th minute.
Kane, who claimed the Golden Boot in the 2018 World Cup with six goals, now shares England’s World Cup record of ten goals with Gary Lineker. Kane scored his first against Croatia after video review nullified Livakovic’s initial penalty save due to a positioning foul.
“Kane went the same way toward the right post with the second attempt, while Livakovic lunged the other direction,” Bellingham commented post-match.
The penalty was awarded after Luka Modric fouled Noni Madueke. Kane then equaled Lineker’s record using a powerful header from a Declan Rice corner kick. He now boasts 81 international goals.
Bellingham threatened the Croatian defense again soon after his goal, only for Livakovic to block his attempt amidst England’s offensive surge.
On the Croatian side, Musa, an FC Dallas player, nailed a header from Ivan Perisic past Jordan Pickford, who also faced a successful shot from Baturina into the left corner.
The game took place at AT&T Stadium, offering fans a break from the Texas heat. Croatian supporters wore their nation’s red-and-white checkered gear, contrasting with the English white.
England’s next engagement is against Ghana in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Croatia will face Panama in Toronto, both fixtures set for Tuesday.
