Andrew Benintendi did not feature in the Chicago White Sox lineup against the Detroit Tigers’ left-hander Tarik Skubal. Despite his impressive pinch-hit grand slam that led to a 5-1 victory over the New York Yankees, the decision was expected. Benintendi has been on a hot streak in June with three home runs in his last six games.
Manager Will Venable often benches Benintendi when facing left-handed pitchers. On Friday, Randall Grichuk filled the designated hitter spot and hit a homer off Skubal in the first inning. Skubal responded emotionally during the fifth inning, directing his frustration towards the White Sox dugout after a key strikeout with the bases loaded. The umpires discussed the situation briefly, but Skubal’s specific grievance was unclear.
Benintendi has started in only six games this year against left-handers. Last year, he started 12 games against them. This role was unexpected given his five-year, $75 million contract signed in 2023. However, Benintendi has accepted this position, understanding the team’s rebuilding priorities. Grichuk showed strong performance with a .987 OPS against lefties, warranting his playing time.
“I’m clear about my role now,” Benintendi said. “I’ve come to terms with it and am happy contributing where needed.” Benintendi, who will soon turn 32, realizes some shifts in his career focus, stepping away from extensive outfield duties. After three losing seasons, his focus is on team wins, even if it means more bench time.
Manager Venable acknowledged the diversity in players’ adaptability, stating, “Benintendi holds an important spot within the team, regularly contributing on and off the field.” Venable praised Benintendi’s readiness and flexibility, particularly highlighted by his stellar performances, such as Thursday’s game-changing slam.
Grichuk and Benintendi offer vital veteran presence within the team. Yet, Benintendi prefers letting younger players lead. “This is their team now,” he mentioned, pointing to the numerous debuts among fresh talent. The rebuilding phase has transitioned with increasing success, lifting team expectations.
Benintendi is heating up offensively. In 16 games since teammate Munetaka Murakami’s injury, he has socked six home runs and gathered 14 RBIs, boasting a 1.095 OPS. His lifetime June OPS of .823 is notably his best month. “June’s been my peak month, albeit I wish it started earlier,” he remarked.
The grand slam against the Yankees could be season-defining, marking only the second pinch-hit grand slam at Yankee Stadium by a visiting player since 1953. The White Sox faced the Tigers with a chance to shake the opposition’s future organizationally. Detroit stands nine games behind division leaders, the White Sox and Cleveland Guardians. Complications increase with Justin Verlander’s withdrawn return.
The Tigers face internal and external expectations, pressed towards a strong performance or facing potential team changes. “There’s not much leeway for error,” Skubal told the Detroit News regarding their season outlook.
For the White Sox, while Saturday’s starting pitcher remains unnamed, Davis Martin is expected for Sunday. Competitive baseball continues against tough opponents like the Phillies, Braves, Dodgers, and Yankees, pushing forward the urgent pursuit of team respectability.
