Issues Arise After Renovation of Washington’s Reflecting Pool

1 week ago 0

Peeling paint mars the Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. following renovations ordered by then-President Donald Trump. Trump alleged intentional damage on his social media. On a recent Friday night, he expressed concern about vandalism, citing the damaged grass near the pool and the newly affected interior surface.

Trump did not provide evidence for these claims. Agencies such as the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and Interior Department did not comment immediately on the matter. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was repainted blue as part of preparations for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence on June 19, 2026.

According to The Washington Post, Park Police arrested an individual on Friday for allegedly peeling paint from the pool. This incident alone does not account for the extensive algae growth or large areas of loose blue paint that have detached from the bottom.

Trump posted further allegations, comparing the pool’s condition to an earlier incident involving chemicals on the National Mall. The discovery of numbers, “86 47,” etched on the grass was also referenced. Authorities suspect the numbers could threaten Trump, implying removal, given “86” slang connotations. Investigations are ongoing.

These events follow mounting criticism about the pool’s state after a $14 million refurbishment. The algae bloom turned the water green despite attempts to maintain a blue hue by painting the bottom. Federal workers used chemicals to combat algae, but sections of the blue paint are now missing, revealing rock underneath.
