Australia’s World Cup Team Criticizes Referee After Loss to U.S.

Australia’s soccer team faced challenges during their match against the U.S., with criticism aimed at referee Felix Zwayer following a 2-0 defeat. Nestory Irankunda, a star player, voiced frustration over Zwayer’s decisions during the game.

‘The referee had a stinker today,’ Irankunda stated, blaming the referee for favoring the U.S. with calls. He emphasized the importance of fairness, pointing out two teams were on the field.

Manager Tony Popovic echoed Irankunda’s sentiments, raising concerns about Zwayer’s officiating. Popovic felt the referee granted fouls too easily, which played to the disadvantage of Australia.

A controversial decision involved the scoring of the U.S.’s second goal. Initially called back for offside, the goal stood after a VAR review determined it was valid. Popovic questioned the decision, suggesting it did not favor Australia’s position.

Assistant coach Paul Okon backed Popovic, arguing their goalkeeper was impeded during the play that led to the goal. Despite reviews, the decision remained in favor of the U.S., sparking further frustration.

After the incurring own goal by Cameron Burgess in the 11th minute, Australia found themselves trailing. Popovic acknowledged the U.S. team’s dominance, attributing Australia’s struggles partly to their own sluggish performance.

Referee Zwayer experienced a cramp near the game’s conclusion, requiring assistance from players of both teams. Despite Australia’s complaints, they remain in a competitive position, standing second in their group.
