Trump Issues Warning on Vandalism at National Mall

1 week ago 0

President Donald Trump addressed concerns over recent vandalism incidents at the National Mall. On Monday, he highlighted the “8647” markings in the grass, connecting them to broader incidents, including damage near the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

The numbers “8647” first appeared on the National Mall lawn on June 11. Authorities responded to the etchings in browned grass and began an investigation. Additionally, the reflecting pool faced issues after reopening in early June following a renovation costing over $14 million. Algae blooms and peeling paint became visible days later. As investigations continue, officials have started making arrests related to activity around the pool.

In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized strict penalties for those involved in such acts. “Of the MANY Statues and Fountains that we rebuilt, renovated, cleaned, and fixed, the only one that was Vandalized was the Reflecting Pool, which is being taken care of, ASAP!” Trump wrote. He noted a 300-foot long gash, illegal chemicals in the water, and the “gigantic 86 47” carved into the grass. He suggested the marking was possibly inspired by James Comey. Trump further reminded the public of the 10-year prison sentence for destruction or attempted destruction of national landmarks.

Newsweek has contacted the White House for comments. This is a developing story with more updates expected.
