Qatar player Assim Madibo received a five-match suspension for a tackle that caused serious injury to Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné during the World Cup. The incident occurred in Canada’s 6-0 win against Qatar in Vancouver.
Madibo was immediately shown a red card for his actions. FIFA’s disciplinary committee confirmed the ban was due to significant foul play, although Madibo has the option to appeal the decision.
Canada’s victory at the World Cup was overshadowed by Koné’s injury. Koné was stretchered off and later underwent surgery for a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg. The injury happened after Madibo tackled him from behind in the 51st minute.
Players nearby instantly recognized the severity, as Koné lay on the ground clutching his leg, visibly distressed. Madibo expressed remorse and personally apologized to Koné following the match. Koné later expressed gratitude via Instagram for the support and prayers he received.
The Qatar national team hasn’t issued a comment regarding the incident.
While Madibo’s suspension is substantial, it is not the longest FIFA World Cup ban. Previously, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez was suspended for nine matches and banned from soccer-related activities for four months for biting an opponent in 2014. Additionally, Italy’s Mauro Tassotti faced an eight-game suspension in 1994 for an elbow offense.
