In Caracas, the residents of a middle-class neighborhood united in an urgent effort to find survivors after recent earthquakes. Their tools were basic: drills, picks, and hammers. Despite the challenges, their determination was remarkable.

On Saturday night, San Bernardino, a neighborhood in Caracas, became the focal point for these rescue efforts. Here, volunteers worked tirelessly to penetrate layers of concrete in search of those who might be trapped. Given the lack of heavy rescue machinery, their resolve to aid potentially trapped individuals was a testament to community spirit.

The Residencia Rita apartment building collapsed due to the dual earthquakes that struck earlier that week. As Saturday unfolded, the odds of finding someone alive three days post-disaster seemed minimal. Despite this, a large crowd assembled, driven by hope and a shared commitment to saving lives.

Residents formed an organized line, akin to firefighters, methodically passing buckets of debris to clear paths for rescue teams. María Alejandra Navarro, a 25-year-old journalist with expertise in rescue operations, was among those leading the efforts. She brought along a team of 14 volunteers to bolster the mission.
