South Korean Coach Resigns After World Cup Exit

2 days ago 0

South Korea’s national football team is in turmoil following the resignation of head coach Hong Myung-bo. This decision came after the team was quickly eliminated from the World Cup, prompting sharp criticism from President Lee Jae Myung.

South Korea started strong, securing a win against the Czech Republic. However, they lost the following two matches against South Africa and Mexico. The team hoped to qualify for the next stage by advancing as one of the third-place teams, but their hopes were dashed when Congo defeated Uzbekistan 3-1.

The unexpected result led to bewilderment and disappointment, both from the fans and the president.

President Lee Jae Myung expressed his dissatisfaction, strongly criticizing the team’s structure and the appointment of the coach. He emphasized the importance of competence over loyalty in leadership roles, suggesting that inadequate personnel decisions can lead to predictable failures.

Hong Myung-bo, who was coaching the national team for the second time, issued an apology to his fans and announced his resignation. He acknowledged his inability to achieve the expected results and took full responsibility for the team’s performance.

“To all of the Korean people who love and support our national team, I would like to genuinely apologize. Today, I’d like to announce that I will step down as the national team head coach.” Hong said, expressing his continued support for Korean football despite stepping down.

South Korea, a regular participant in the World Cup with 11 consecutive appearances, has struggled in recent tournaments. The president has called upon the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to conduct a comprehensive review of the national team’s program. Steps will be taken to reform the sports administration to prevent such incidents in the future.
