Vice President JD Vance strongly criticized the Supreme Court’s ruling upholding birthright citizenship during ‘The Ingraham Angle’ on Tuesday. Vance warned that this decision might encourage more individuals to exploit the U.S. immigration system.
The Supreme Court opposed President Donald Trump’s attempt to revoke birthright citizenship, affirming the Constitution’s provision of automatic citizenship for most individuals born in the U.S. as per the 14th Amendment. Vance described the ruling as a ‘major mistake.’
He suggested that the decision might encourage people to visit the U.S. on vacation specifically to give birth, thus granting citizenship benefits to the child and their family. ‘It’s a preposterous ruling,’ Vance commented.
While discussing the Supreme Court’s decision, Vance also noted a ‘silver lining,’ implying that the narrow ruling suggests the concept of birthright citizenship is tenuous. Many legal experts anticipated a broader consensus against the ruling, but it indicated that the future of birthright citizenship remains unsettled.
Vance expressed dissatisfaction with birthright citizenship, arguing that it serves as a loophole benefiting illegal immigrants. For more than 150 years, this constitutional right has been part of U.S. law, but Vance believes it rewards unauthorized immigrants simply for having children born within the U.S.
He mentioned that the administration is evaluating several strategies to counter the Supreme Court’s decision. Potential actions could include restrictions on U.S. territories like the Northern Mariana Islands, where concerns exist about ‘birth tourism’ schemes involving foreign nationals.
Senior officials have highlighted fears over countries such as China, where women might travel to these territories to give birth and secure U.S. citizenship for their children. Vance emphasized the need to reform the immigration system and prevent misuse of the Supreme Court ruling.
