Judge Seeks Explanation for Tarp Covering Kennedy Center
A U.S. federal judge requested an explanation regarding a tarpaulin covering the facade of the Kennedy Center where President Donald Trump’s name was recently removed. District Judge Christopher Cooper instructed the board of trustees of the performing arts venue to clarify the purpose and status of the tarp and scaffolding on the front portico by the end of July.
The tarp remains two weeks after Trump’s name was removed, amid ongoing legal disputes.
Legal Challenges and Court Filings
A U.S. Department of Justice filing on behalf of the Kennedy Center revealed surprising details on Monday. The document responded to issues raised by ex-officio board member Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio. Beatty is suing to remove Trump’s name from the center and halt its closure for renovations.
The Kennedy Center admitted that Beatty was muted during a board meeting on December 18, 2025, preventing her from speaking against adding Trump’s name to the center.
Beatty argues that adding Trump’s name contradicts guidelines on federal spending, which prohibit additional memorials or plaques without Congress approval.
The center acknowledges that there was no advance notice in the agenda about considering the name change. The decision lacked discussion on potential risks, downsides, or conflicts of interest.
Impact on Fundraising and Controversial Closure Plans
The center’s lawyers argue that removing Trump’s name could lead to financial loss from donors and affect fundraising efforts.
Earlier, Trump announced a two-year closure for renovations, citing consultations with contractors, musical experts, and other advisors. However, this was done without plans, timelines, funding information, or a board vote according to the center’s lawyers.
Despite denying reports of falling ticket sales after Trump became board chair, the center admits that by October 2025, nearly half of the tickets were unsold.
