At the close of the NHL regular season, speculation surrounded Alexander Ovechkin’s future in hockey. Many wondered if his legendary career was ending. However, Ovechkin has decided to return for at least one more season.
The team announced on Thursday that Ovechkin has signed a one-year contract. The deal includes a $1 million salary, a $4.75 million bonus for playing 10 games, and a $3.25 million signing bonus. This results in a cap hit of $4,250,000, according to Puckpedia.
For a player of Ovechkin’s caliber, the terms are favorable to the team. “I’m back!” Ovechkin said in a press release. “Thank you to everyone for giving my family and me the time to make this decision. I’m healthy and love playing hockey. I’m excited to return and aim for the playoffs with my teammates. See you in September, DC!”
The decision seemed likely, especially after Ovechkin’s gesture of waving off the Pittsburgh Penguins’ handshake after what could have been his last game with them. His performance supports this choice.
Despite nearing 41, Ovechkin still delivers impressive results. Last season, he played all 82 games, scoring 64 points with 32 goals and 32 assists. These numbers prove he remains competitive.
Notably, Ovechkin’s contract involves a 50% pay cut. This reduction provides the Capitals with additional financial flexibility. It allowed for roster adjustments over the summer, including the additions of Boone Jenner and Alex Tuch.
