Cape Verde’s Historic World Cup Journey

Since the start of the World Cup, many people have learned about Cape Verde, the small nation off the west coast of Africa. In its opening match, Cape Verde made a strong impression with a draw against Spain. The team continued to surprise with additional draws against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, becoming the smallest country ever to qualify for the World Cup’s knockout stage. Their achievement set up a challenging match against Argentina in the round of 32.

The clash between Cape Verde and Argentina was viewed as a modern-day David vs. Goliath encounter, reflecting the significant difference in their global rankings. Argentina held the second position, while Cape Verde was at 59th. Argentina eventually won with a 3-2 scoreline in extra time. The decisive goal came from an own goal by Diney Borges in the 111th minute. The match was thrilling and competitive, with key performances from Lionel Messi of Argentina and Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vozinha.

Messi, the 39-year-old Argentine legend, opened the scoring in the 29th minute. This goal marked Messi’s seventh in the tournament and his 20th in World Cup history, extending his record. Messi started the tournament with a hat trick against Algeria and added to his tally against Austria and Jordan.

During the second half, Messi attempted to increase his goal count. In the 63rd minute, he faced Vozinha again, but the Cape Verde goalkeeper successfully blocked his shot. Around 10 minutes later, Vozinha made another impressive save from a Messi free kick, demonstrating his skills in this intense matchup.

Vozinha’s journey parallels Messi’s as he too is in the later stages of his career. His standout performances began with a clean sheet against Spain in a 0-0 draw, which garnered him recognition both domestically and internationally. While Argentine players have competed in top leagues globally, Vozinha’s career includes stints in Cyprus and Slovakia. He has represented Cape Verde since 2012 but played in a World Cup for the first time in this tournament.

The match saw Argentina briefly take the lead in the 92nd minute when Lisandro Martínez scored from a challenging angle. Cape Verde responded with a stunning equalizer by Sidny Lopes Cabral, whose powerful shot found the top right corner of the net. Shortly after, Vozinha made his eighth save on another Messi attempt. The heartbreaking moment for Cape Verde came when Argentina secured their win through a fortunate own goal.

By the end of the match, the apparent gap between the teams was narrowed to a single goal difference. This intense battle between underdog and powerhouse became a memorable showcase of two players who left their mark on World Cup history.
