Democratic representatives recently expressed their pride in being American, despite disagreements with former President Donald Trump. This conversation emerged as part of Fox News Digital’s inquiry into lawmakers’ views on national pride ahead of the United States’ 250th Independence Day.
Rep. Mark Pocan of Wisconsin acknowledged the freedoms enshrined in U.S. laws. He highlighted the opportunity for individual advancement within the framework of American law, while noting occasional concerns.
At the heart of the conversation was the distrust some Democrats feel towards the Trump administration’s leadership, contrasted by their belief in the foundational principles contributing to U.S. prosperity. Only Rep. Al Green of Texas refrained from elaborating on his feelings of national pride.
“I am very proud to tell you that impeachment is an option to remove a reckless, ruthless, lawless president,” Green stated, reaffirming his pride in this constitutional measure.
Rep. Lloyd Doggett, also from Texas, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing his faith in Americans to defend democracy. He expressed a desire to continue celebrating American independence by opposing authoritarian trends.
Despite his disagreements with the Trump administration, Doggett differentiated those views from his broader perspectives on the nation itself. He praised America’s innovative spirit and commitment to upholding its values, calling it the world’s greatest democracy.
Other Democrats, like Rep. Shri Thanedar from Michigan, voiced similar beliefs in U.S. exceptionalism. Thanedar, an immigrant from India, praised the country’s history of immigrant contributions and expressed pride in his citizenship, though he noted some concerns about the current administration’s policies.
Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers expressed unwavering pride in the country’s foundational principles. Rep. Glenn Grothman from Wisconsin credited the U.S. Constitution for providing the freedoms that enable American prosperity. He noted the nation’s material wealth and spiritual depth as unique characteristics.
“I guess our Constitution and all the freedoms we have that other countries don’t have,” Grothman said, emphasizing what makes the U.S. stand out globally.
Rep. Cory Mills of Florida highlighted Americans’ dedication to protecting national interests through strength. He emphasized the nation’s commitment to preserving freedoms unlike any other.
