Following the Mexico-England World Cup soccer game, gunfire erupted in East Los Angeles, injuring four individuals. The incident occurred when crowds gathered on Sunday night after Mexico’s narrow 3-2 defeat to England.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that a dispute at the intersection of Whittier Boulevard and Leonard Avenue led to the shooting. Around 9:35 p.m., an individual pulled out a gun during the argument and opened fire. The attack wounded two men, a woman, and a minor.
The intended targets, the two men, suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to a hospital. The woman and the minor, a male, left the initial scene to contact deputies in a different location. They were subsequently taken to the hospital, also with non-life threatening injuries.
As of Monday morning, authorities had provided no additional details about the shooter. The celebration surrounding Mexico’s World Cup performance, despite their ultimate elimination, attracted large crowds.
Authorities have encouraged anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact the Sheriff’s Department’s East L.A. station at (323) 264-4151.
