Heavy rains impacted New Jersey, leading to a partial roof collapse at a big box store. This occurred on Monday, causing a temporary entrapment of two individuals inside the structure, authorities reported.
The situation unfolded at BJ’s Wholesale Club around 11:16 a.m. Ocean Township police, Monmouth Court Sheriff’s deputies, and other first responders quickly arrived at the scene, confirming details through the sheriff’s office.
At the time of the collapse, 27 people were in the store. Two individuals were initially trapped but managed to free themselves and exit safely, according to the sheriff’s statement.
Video footage captured the intensity of the water flooding into BJ’s Wholesale Store in Oakhurst, New Jersey on that day.
Philip Falcetano noted, “This incident is another reminder of how quickly severe weather can create dangerous and unpredictable conditions,” as expressed by Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden.
The sheriff praised the first responders for their swift action under difficult circumstances, stating, “Despite the ongoing flooding and severe weather affecting our communities, everyone worked seamlessly together to ensure all individuals were accounted for. Their dedication exemplifies the best of public safety.” No injuries were reported.
By early afternoon, over 2 inches of rain had accumulated in South Jersey, situated approximately 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
