Team USA’s Challenging Start Against Belgium in the 2026 World Cup

2 hours ago 0

Team USA faced a difficult beginning in their Round of 16 match against Belgium during the FIFA World Cup 2026. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed understandable frustration due to early setbacks. Belgium startled Team USA within the first ten minutes when Charles De Ketelaere scored, sending a wave of silence over the packed Seattle Stadium.

The situation improved momentarily when Malik Tillman scored with a free kick, his second successful attempt following his shot against Bosnia and Herzegovina. His shot went past the renowned Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, with the help of a deflection.

However, the brief respite was short-lived as the U.S. conceded another goal in the 33rd minute. De Ketelaere scored again, this time with a header over experienced defender Tim Ream.

Pochettino showed his displeasure by kicking Powerade bottles on the sidelines when Belgium celebrated their second goal.

The first half concluded with significant discussions needed before the second. Possession statistics were nearly balanced, with Belgium holding 53% compared to Team USA’s 47%, but Belgium clearly dominated offensively. They managed five shots on goal, while the U.S. had only one. Additionally, Belgium created four substantial opportunities, indicating a potential for an even wider margin.

Team USA must elevate their performance to advance to the quarterfinals where they would face Spain. Achieving this would mark a historic achievement, with only the 2002 U.S. team previously reaching this stage under the contemporary World Cup format.

Pochettino, known for his passionate leadership, may intensify his team talk in the locker room. It’s crucial for him to devise strategies to regain momentum from Belgium after the first half.
