Xbox’s Historic Restructure Aims to Revitalize Gaming Strategy

The announcement of the most significant overhaul in Xbox’s history marks a major shift in the company’s strategy toward consoles, game development, and customer experiences. On Monday, Microsoft stated it would lay off 4,800 employees, including 1,600 immediate cuts within its Xbox division. The company aims to center its efforts on the priorities crucial for maintaining its position in a rapidly evolving industry.

Leadership Insights

Asha Sharma, who assumed leadership at Xbox in February, indicated that four game-development studios would shift to new ownership, causing another 1,600 layoffs. She emphasized that these adjustments are meant to enhance Xbox’s future, focusing on a more global and innovative gaming landscape. Sharma assured that 2023 would see significant investments in Xbox, emphasizing focus, discipline, and clarity to establish Xbox as a leading platform for play and creativity.

Understanding the Restructure

The decision follows financial difficulties, including a 7% decline in gaming revenue and a 33% drop in Xbox hardware revenue over the past year. In June, Sharma outlined challenges like shrinking margins and a crisis in hardware components, alongside misguided investment priorities. The executive declared the current business model unsustainable, citing margins significantly lower than comparable platforms.

Xbox’s strategy involves streamlining operations to concentrate on high-growth projects. Small development studios such as Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs are being divested. Meanwhile, King, the Candy Crush maker, and Mojang, the Minecraft developer, now report directly to Sharma.

Impact on Gamers

The realignment means fewer studios and employees, with a sharper focus on major franchises and the core Xbox business. Analyst Piers Harding-Rolls highlighted a focus on the biggest intellectual properties, games, and audiences. Studios making niche games that do not drive Game Pass subscriptions might find better opportunities outside Xbox, thus the divestment of certain studios.

Xbox confirmed that ongoing projects would not face cancellation. Ninja Theory, under new ownership, secured funding to advance Senua, a part of the Hellblade series. Undead Labs committed to releasing State of Decay 3, continuing development despite the ownership change.

Harding-Rolls noted an intensified focus on significant franchises, particularly Minecraft, aiming to compete with platforms like Roblox and Fortnite, alongside Candy Crush. Despite setbacks with Game Pass investment and content expansion, Xbox admitted its prior strategy since 2018—marked by acquisitions and Game Pass growth—fell short of expectations.

Looking forward, Harding-Rolls suggested a strategy shift towards a more affordable Game Pass. A potential ad-supported version is anticipated, alongside a price drop for Game Pass Ultimate. Additionally, speculation surrounds the release of a next-generation console, likely by 2028.
