Jayson Tatum Reflects on Jaylen Brown’s Departure from Celtics

2 hours ago 0

Jayson Tatum shared his perspective on the “abrupt ending” caused by the Boston Celtics’ trade, which led to Jaylen Brown leaving the team. Tatum described this as a “tough” aspect of the NBA business. Brown moved to the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this month in exchange for Paul George and several future draft picks.

Tatum, who has been selected to the NBA All-Star team six times and to the All-NBA First Team four times, spoke at Newton Community Stage in Massachusetts. The event was organized to promote his children’s book, “Baby Dunks-a-Lot: The Day the Basketballs Stopped Bouncing: A Picture Book.” Acclaimed journalist and author Howard Bryant engaged Tatum in conversation on various topics, including the new phase of his NBA career, which in the upcoming season, will be without Brown as a teammate.

“To be honest, it’s weird. You know, you play on a team with a guy for nine years, who I was fortunate enough to go to the Finals with twice, win a championship, and push each other to be the players that we are,” Tatum stated.

Tatum described the NBA as an incredible business and profession but acknowledged its downsides. He reflected on moments when you expect to continue playing alongside someone only to discover they are no longer part of your team. Without naming Brown directly, Tatum called this a “tough” reality and emphasized the importance of cherishing the moments shared before such abrupt changes.

Tatum appreciated the contributions Brown made during his “great years” with Boston and the franchise. Despite the departure of former teammates, Tatum stressed the importance of welcoming new teammates and moving forward.

Tatum’s comments coincided with a statement from ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania, who described the off-court relationship between Tatum and Brown last year as “as close to non-existent as you could have.” Brown joined the Celtics during the 2016-17 season as the third pick in the NBA Draft, while Tatum followed as a third pick the next season. Many had speculated about the potential dynasty after a championship win in 2024, but circumstances have changed unexpectedly.

Celtics general manager Brad Stevens stated that Tatum was not included in the decision-making process regarding Brown’s trade. “I know how little I sleep. I don’t think anybody else needs to feel that,” Stevens commented, according to the NBA’s report.

The recent trade surprised many due to the caliber of the exchanged players. The Celtics parted with a key contributor to their 2024 NBA championship and Finals MVP. Brown’s performance in the past season led the Celtics to the second-best record in the Eastern Conference and secured the No. 2 seed.

While some analysts predicted a bleak future for Boston, Tatum faced challenges as he recovered from a severe Achilles injury, which limited his play to 16 regular-season games. Tatum also participated in the NBA Playoffs. Notably, he missed Boston’s crucial Game 7 against the Philadelphia 76ers to manage his injury, observing from the sidelines as Brown and the Celtics lost on home turf.
