Debate Over ICE Vehicle Stops Sparks Controversy

During a press briefing on July 16, 2026, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed a contentious issue involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Speaking in Washington, DC, she clarified that ICE vehicle stops remain in effect despite prior reports suggesting a pause.

These stops have been under scrutiny following two fatal incidents earlier in July. Senator Angus King’s office had initially shared plans from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to halt these actions. However, President Trump countered this idea on Truth Social, advocating the continuation of vehicle stops as vital crime-fighting tools.

“We CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP! Once we do, we are playing right into the criminal’s hands,” Trump stated.

Leavitt, reinforcing the President’s stance, stated, “Vehicle stops are continuing. Verbal guidance has been given to all field offices across the country by the Department of Homeland Security.” She emphasized that the President and DHS agree on this approach to address illegal activity.

The issue gained attention following the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, an immigrant from Mexico, who was shot by ICE in Houston. ICE claimed Araujo used his vehicle as a weapon, which led to the shooting, but this account faces challenges from passengers present during the incident.

Similarly, Joan Durán Guerrero, a Colombian national, was fatally shot by ICE in Maine when agents attempted to stop his car. DHS stated that Guerrero’s vehicle fled, posing a public threat, leading an agent to discharge his weapon. Evidence supporting this claim has not been disclosed.

In another tragic event, a man in St. Augustine, Florida died after being struck by a tractor-trailer while fleeing from an ICE stop. The Florida Highway Patrol reported the incident, but further details have yet to emerge.
