White Sox Catcher Kyle Teel Exits Game with Ankle Injury

In Arlington, Texas, during Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox catcher Kyle Teel left with a left ankle injury. The incident occurred in the second inning when Teel attempted to tag a sliding Ezequiel Duran at home plate after receiving a throw from right fielder Braden Montgomery. Duran managed to score, and Teel’s injury added to a challenging season for the catcher.

Teel is undergoing further evaluation for the ankle injury. It’s another setback in a season filled with injuries. Earlier, on March 10, he suffered a right hamstring strain while playing for Italy during the World Baseball Classic. His return was further delayed by a sprained lateral collateral ligament in his right knee on May 16. This happened during a rehab stint with Triple-A Charlotte, when his front spike got caught during a swing.

Teel made his return to the major league on June 22. Since then, in 19 games, his performance included a .190 batting average, a .271 on-base percentage, and a .317 slugging percentage, along with two home runs and 14 RBIs. Following Teel’s exit on Monday, Drew Romo took over the catching duties.

In related team news, Chicago White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery resumed play after the All-Star break refreshed him. The team successfully maintained their momentum following the break, clinching the first position in the AL Central. Even though the Sox’s four-game winning streak ended with a narrow 1-0 defeat where pitcher Davis Martin was the losing player, they bounced back strong. In a decisive comeback, they dominated with a 12-4 victory, regaining sole possession of first place.
