Two men suffered stab wounds on Manhattan’s Upper West Side on Thursday afternoon. The New York Police Department (NYPD) informed Newsweek that a person of interest is currently in custody.
The Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation noted on social media that the victims were “visibly Jewish.” The men, aged 57 and 50, were found with wounds to their torsos at around 1:31 p.m. near West 84th Street and Central Park West. Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment.
CBS News’ Anna Schecter reported that one victim was wearing a kippah. In response to the incident, the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation emphasized, “Jewish Americans should never fear being attacked for their identity. Authorities must investigate swiftly and ensure enhanced protection for Jewish neighborhoods, schools, synagogues, and institutions. Safety from fear and hatred is a right for all Americans.”
New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin categorically described the incident as an “antisemitic stabbing.” She expressed her outrage on social media, stating, “I am sickened and furious over what appears to be an antisemitic stabbing. While we await more details, the situation is appalling. The Jewish community’s fear is genuine. Every New Yorker deserves safety, regardless of faith or identity. We must unite against antisemitism and ensure accountability. I thank the NYPD for its swift response. My prayers are with the victims and their families.”
The attack coincided with Tisha B’Av, a solemn day in the Jewish calendar marked by fasting and mourning. New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, co-chair of NYC’s Bipartisan Task Force to Combat Antisemitism, mentioned that reports indicated the attacker was shouting “Allahu Akbar.” This phrase means “God is the greatest” in Arabic. Vernikov also reported that the attacker used a screwdriver during the assault. Efforts to solicit comments from City Hall have been made by Newsweek.
