A neglected bus shelter has been beautifully renovated with additions such as hanging baskets, art, and even a chandelier. Molly Thompson, owner of the Woolpack pub in Chilham, Kent, was fed up with the deteriorating state of the shelter outside her business.
Community Effort and Funding
Thompson, who lives in the area with her dog Wallace, secured council permission before beginning the transformation. She said, I would walk past that bus stop every day and found it an eyesore.
The refurbishment involved community fundraising, including raffles and generous donations from locals.
An anonymous envelope with £100, approximately $134, was among the contributions received. The total renovation cost was around £1,000, or $1,340, and required about four days of work.
Community Transformation
With the local parish council’s approval, Thompson, her mother, and others began the project. The final result includes new paint, hanging baskets, and secured decorations to deter vandalism.
Previously, the shelter was described by Thompson as dirty, with graffiti and invasive plants. Now it is praised as one of the best and cutest bus stops in the UK.
Village Involvement
Thompson expressed her desire to continue community involvement. We enjoy sponsoring and participating in local initiatives,
she stated. She also mentioned the possibility of renovating another shelter if permitted.
The village of Chilham is renowned for its beauty, and the newly renovated bus shelter now complements the area.
