Corinne Bailey Rae: A Journey from Coat Check to Stardom

Corinne Bailey Rae began her career far from the spotlight, working the coat check at the Hi-Fi Club in Leeds, England. She longed to see the bands play, confined to a ‘little box’ where she could only hear the music.

Her talent emerged when a record label heard her perform “Like a Star” during an audition. This debut single gained popularity, followed by the hit “Put Your Records On.” The song’s lyrics promote self-acceptance and draw from Bailey Rae’s experiences growing up with a Black and a white parent, often feeling “on the margins.” She recalls wanting to play the cello but settling for the more portable violin due to financial limitations. These challenges were never a source of sadness for her but shaped her perspective.

Bailey Rae’s distinct voice initially caused her concern until she discovered the raw, textured sounds of artists like Billie Holiday and Kurt Cobain. This encouraged her to embrace her own sound, leading to the release of her successful self-titled album in 2006, which brought recognition from music icons such as Stevie Wonder and Prince.

In 2008, tragedy struck when her husband and band member, Jason Rae, died from an accidental overdose. This loss marked a profound moment in her life. She managed her grief by understanding the beauty in life’s impermanence, eventually channeling her emotions into her second album, “The Sea.”

Bailey Rae later married Steve Brown, a producer she worked with, after Jason’s mother intuitively suggested the pairing. The couple has two daughters, and Bailey Rae sees her life as having a distinct ‘before and after’ the pivotal events of her life.

Since then, she has released additional albums that received critical acclaim. Her contributions to culture in her hometown have been recognized with a sculpture named “Ribbons” by artist Pippa Hale, celebrating over 300 impactful women from Leeds, including suffragettes, politicians, and artists.

In 2023, Bailey Rae released a children’s book inspired by her hit song, highlighting how music can heal and be a lifelong companion. The book is part of her year-long celebration of her debut album’s 20th anniversary, accompanied by a tour that kicked off at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival in England.

Bailey Rae acknowledges the pressure to replicate her initial success but maintains her focus on making music that resonates personally. She embraces the concept of ‘rebirth,’ viewing every moment as an opportunity to start anew.
