Guillaume Bos witnessed a wildfire ravage his village in the Gironde region, a majorly affected area by the wildfires in southwestern France. He stated that, surrounding his home, “everything is burned as far as the eye can see.”
“It’s a real disaster,” expressed Mr. Bos, 36, a business manager and forest owner from Le Temple. This village, comprising approximately 600 residents, is located around 18 miles west of Bordeaux. The fires have been burning for several days, driven by unusually hot and dry weather, while firefighters struggle to manage them.
Mr. Bos and others in France received evacuation orders on Friday afternoon. Despite this, he chose to remain with local farmers and forest owners to combat the flames. His wife and son evacuated the area.
“When your wife and son leave, and you don’t know how things are going to turn out – yeah, it’s not easy,” he said.
Using tractors and trailers with water tanks, Mr. Bos and his friends saved most homes in the village center. However, about six houses and most of the nearby pine forest were destroyed. Although the immediate danger has passed, they continue to spray water around Le Temple to prevent rekindling of the fire.
