Tragic Murder-Suicide in Grand Haven Township

A tragic incident occurred in Grand Haven Township last week when Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, fatally shot his wife, Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children. Afterward, he turned the gun on himself. Authorities discovered the family in their burning home, located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, on Friday.

Responding to a fire report, authorities found that all family members had died from gunshot wounds. Captain Jacob Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Kristopher’s death was a suicide. Sparks also indicated that the fire was deliberately set in multiple areas of the house after the shootings, but the investigation into its exact starting point is ongoing.

The investigation at this point shows that this was a murder-suicide, with the fire being started after the murders,” Sparks stated. “The case remains open and under investigation to try to get to the bottom and get answers of what happened leading up to the incident.”

Kristopher Karolkiewicz held a position as vice president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association until early October. He worked remotely for their CPR and first aid division.

Amanda Karolkiewicz, affectionately known as Mandy, served as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary School in Grand Haven. Superintendent Kristin Perkowski praised her kindness and dedication in a public letter, emphasizing how deeply she would be missed by students and colleagues alike.

The couple met while working at a beverage company in 2008, began dating that summer, and married in August 2009. They had their first son on April 25, 2011, a moment Amanda cherished as recorded in her blog posts. Over the years, they expanded their family with two more biological sons, two adopted daughters, and another biological son. Amanda often shared her faith and family joy in her blog, which remained active until 2016. She continued posting family updates and activities on TikTok, including a recent trip to China.

As their family mourns this senseless tragedy, they have set up a GoFundMe page to cover expenses and establish a scholarship in the children’s memory. The organizers expressed profound grief and hope to create a lasting legacy through the scholarship.

This past weekend, our family experienced a tragedy beyond words,” the organizers wrote. “Becky and Steve Lawwill, my Aunt and Uncle, lost their daughter and six beloved grandchildren in a senseless tragedy. No words can capture that kind of heartbreak.”
