The International Football Association Board (IFAB) clarified its referee guidance impacting decisions in the recent World Cup quarterfinals featuring Switzerland and Argentina. Switzerland’s forward, Breel Embolo, faced a controversial ejection that influenced the game’s outcome.
Embolo received a second yellow card after a video review suggested he simulated being fouled. Argentina capitalized on this decision, winning 3-1 in extra time. The decision sparked accusations of referee bias, with previous opponent Egypt highlighting perceived favoritism towards Lionel Messi’s team.
The Zurich-based IFAB addressed this issue with a statement indicating the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) protocol for mistaken identity didn’t apply in Embolo’s case. The current rules dictate VAR’s role in identifying the player committing the foul, not reviewing the foul itself.
Switzerland’s coach, Murat Yakin, expressed frustration at the ruling, citing the decision’s significant impact on the game’s result.
Following ongoing reviews since March, IFAB recognized the need to assess scenarios like Embolo’s. The discussion during the 2026 FIFA World Cup positively received the use of the mistaken identity clause.
UEFA Supports IFAB’s Clarity
UEFA welcomed IFAB’s explanations, emphasizing that VAR isn’t intended to completely re-judge on-field decisions. UEFA highlighted the importance of concise reviews, arguing that extended reviews suggest unclear or non-obvious errors.
FIFA’s overall strategy at the World Cup received approval, especially after mixed reactions to VAR use in the Premier League. UEFA set a standard for intervention during obvious mistakes or missed incidents.
UEFA also confirmed its adherence to IFAB’s crackdown on time-wasting, as agreed in March. This season, referees will enforce this rule consistently.
UEFA is organizing various prestigious competitions, including men’s and women’s club leagues and national team games, underscoring the importance of streamlined adjudication.
