The American Red Cross announced a national blood supply crisis, marking only the second such declaration in its history. This comes as blood donations fell to the lowest summer level in four years. The organization cited extreme heat, poor air quality, and the increase in foodborne illnesses as factors that deterred potential donors this summer.
Blood donations typically decline in the summer. People often go on vacation, resulting in fewer available donors. Moreover, summer activities tend to be more outdoor-oriented, leading to higher injury rates. This increases the demand for blood, further stressing the limited supply.
On Monday, the Red Cross highlighted the urgent need for donations. Community members are encouraged to contribute to help alleviate this shortage and support those in need during emergencies and surgeries.
