Immigrant Business Owners Plan Legal Action Against NYC Mayor’s Grocery Store Initiative

Several immigrant business owners are preparing to take legal action against New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. They aim to contest his plan for city-owned grocery stores, Fox News Digital confirmed. The New York Post reported that the Multicultural Business Coalition (MBC) has decided to sue the city over Mamdani’s initiative. This plan involves opening five grocery stores with city funding, offering food prices up to 30% lower than traditional stores.

MBC Chairman Frank Garcia stated that the coalition will soon send a letter to Mamdani’s office. The letter will outline the MBC’s legal intentions to support competing small businesses and bodegas. If the mayor doesn’t respond or agree to meet within three weeks, the group plans further legal action.

Mamdani’s previously failed attempt at city-run grocery stores in Kansas City has not deterred his current plan.

The Multicultural Business Coalition has already announced efforts to legally challenge Mamdani’s taxpayer-funded grocery stores. Frank Garcia communicated to Fox News Digital the coalition’s frustration over stalled meetings with the city administration, noting, “The commissioner said they are open to hearing from everyone, yet we have been waiting months for a meeting.” He also emphasized the nonpartisan nature of their initiative, which seeks to highlight the struggles of small business owners facing rising costs in New York City.

Though a lawsuit is not officially filed, Garcia stated that legal preparations would be ready by the deadline. The MBC’s efforts are backed by various organizations, emphasizing their wide-ranging support.

Political commentator Stephen A. Smith criticized Mamdani’s policies, claiming his supporters aren’t those who manage daily expenses.

New York City bodega and business owners have voiced their concerns over Mayor Mamdani’s grocery store proposals. Garcia declared, “We’re nonpartisan, open to all, regardless of political affiliation.” This includes meeting with a Democratic Jewish organization and civil rights groups ready to support and fund the cause.

The MBC was formed this year explicitly to oppose Mamdani’s grocery store project. Its members represent African, Asian, Caribbean, Hispanic, Jewish, and Middle Eastern business communities. Furthermore, they receive support from prominent figures like New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

Mayor Mamdani has underestimated the notion of wealthy individuals leaving New York City due to tax concerns, dismissing it as ‘imagined.’

In addition to the grocery store controversy, Mayor Mamdani faces a separate lawsuit from New York City landlords challenging his support for a rent freeze.
