Will Lawrence’s Call for AI Data Center Moratorium and Campaign Finance Reform

Will Lawrence, a Michigan House candidate and member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has called for a halt on the building of new AI data centers. He emphasized the importance of having a comprehensive national discussion about the generation of advanced AI technologies.

Speaking in South Lansing, Michigan, Lawrence expressed concerns about the influence of Silicon Valley billionaires on local communities. He questioned their assurances that energy costs wouldn’t rise, casting doubt on whether such developments benefit the broader population or just a select few.

In addition to advocating for a moratorium on AI data centers, Lawrence criticized former President Donald Trump and supported reforming campaign finance. He proposed publicly funded elections to reduce the influence of money in politics. Lawrence called for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission decision, a landmark ruling he feels has allowed dark money to flourish in political campaigns.

Facing questions about more radical DSA policies, such as eliminating key government branches, Lawrence chose not to delve into these topics. He stated his focus remained on opposing the development of AI data centers, ending international conflicts, and ensuring universal health care.

Endorsed by prominent figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Lawrence is campaigning in Michigan’s 7th district. He aims to secure the Democratic primary ahead of facing Republican incumbent Tom Barrett, who is in his first term after succeeding Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin. Lawrence faces additional competition in the primary from candidates such as Bridget Brink, a former ambassador to Ukraine and member of the Obama National Security Council.
