US Fertility Rate Declines and Seasonal Allergies Increase

2 weeks ago 0

The US fertility rate has reached a record low, with an alarming decline to an average of 1.56 children per couple. Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News Senior Medical Analyst, emphasizes the potential impacts on population size. Additionally, seasonal allergies are surging across the nation due to a cold winter followed by a wet spring. Dr. Siegel highlights the ‘hygiene hypothesis’ as a key factor influencing immune system development.

In recent survey data, insights into sexual frequency among married Americans challenge common assumptions about relationship health. National demographic studies suggest lower sexual frequency is normal in aging and long-term relationships. The survey highlights a potential ‘sweet spot’ for marital satisfaction.

Data from the General Social Survey by NORC at the University of Chicago reveals varied sexual frequency among 1,893 married respondents:

  • 32.5% reported no sexual activity
  • 11.3% had sex once or twice a year
  • 11.7% engaged about once a month
  • 15.3% had sex two or three times a month
  • 12.9% reported having sex about once a week
  • 12.2% said two or three times a week
  • 4.1% reported more than three times a week

According to research by telehealth platform Hims, the average American adult engages in sexual activity 53 times a year. Marriage is often associated with less frequent sex, but the difference is minimal. A 2014 study found married individuals had sex around 55 times versus 59 times for unmarried peers.

Despite sexual frequency, experts assert there is no ‘perfect statistic’ for sexual activity. Clinical data suggests aiming for high sexual quotas does not improve relationship quality. A 2015 study in Social Psychological and Personality Science evaluated over 30,000 individuals, revealing diminishing benefits beyond weekly physical intimacy.

Even amid aging, intimacy remains crucial for emotional and physical health. AARP data suggests 17% of adults aged 70 and older engage in weekly sexual activity.

Factors Influencing Libido

When intimacy declines, it is essential to consider various physiological aspects rather than assuming incompatibility. Healthcare providers recommend open discussion and consulting a physician when facing mismatched sexual desire.

The International Society for Sexual Medicine highlights conditions affecting libido:

  • Hormonal Shifts: Testosterone decreases in aging men and estrogen fluctuations during perimenopause or menopause in women.
  • Vascular and Metabolic Health: Cardiovascular issues, chronic fatigue, and thyroid dysfunction contribute to lower libido.
  • Prescription Side Effects: SSRIs and blood pressure medications can impair sexual function.
  • Stress Response: High cortisol levels from chronic stress impact reproductive hormone output.
  • Relationship Issues: Emotional intimacy, communication problems, and unresolved conflicts can affect desire.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Poor diet, lack of exercise, and substance abuse also reduce libido.

Instead of forcing sexual activity, healthcare providers encourage addressing hormonal levels, medication profiles, and overall health through open communication and medical consultation.
