A senior House Democrat is urging party members to resist the growing influence of the socialist faction within the party. Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., compared the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to the House Freedom Caucus, noting their impact on the party.
Suozzi criticized the use of ‘democratic’ in the DSA’s name, stating, “I don’t like the idea of them using ‘democratic.’ As the Democratic Party, we should fight against that.” He believes that, similar to the Republicans handling the Freedom Caucus, Democrats will need to address this group’s influence.
The rise of DSA-linked candidates in primary elections is noticeable, having defeated some incumbent progressives. This advancement causes concern for some party members. Suozzi advises Democrats to address the perception of a DSA takeover seriously.
Suozzi identifies as part of a diminishing group of moderates and is the co-chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, which focuses on bipartisan legislative solutions. As a key target for Republicans, his district is vital for Democrats in the upcoming elections. Suozzi believes Democrats should emphasize policy issues over Trump as a figure.
According to Suozzi, higher prices in groceries, fuel, and health insurance should be attributed to the current administration’s policies, not solely Trump. He points out that a Democrat-controlled House could empower the socialist wing, highlighting this as a Republican argument.
In New York, figures like Mayor Zohran Mamdani serve as points of contention for the right, yet Suozzi emphasizes that he differs significantly from Mamdani’s positions. Despite disagreements with the socialist left, Suozzi stresses the importance of organization and clear messaging.
Suozzi initiated ‘The Promise to America,’ gathering support from Congress members and state officials. The promise advocates capitalism, safety, pride in America, and mainstream values, distinguishing from extremist views.
Facing Republican Mike LiPetri, backed by Trump, Suozzi maintains his stance against the socialist policies, focusing on pragmatic solutions.
