White Sox capitalize on errors to defeat Rays 9-1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Chicago White Sox left fielder Sam Antonacci began Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays with a grounder to second base. Ryan Vilade couldn’t field the ball cleanly, resulting in Antonacci reaching on an error. This was the first of several miscues by the Rays in the first inning. The Sox took advantage, scoring twice in the inning as part of a 9-1 victory before 23,559 spectators at Tropicana Field. The American League Central-leading Sox improved to 59-52, winning two of three games in the series against the AL East-leading Rays.

Infielder Miguel Vargas expressed satisfaction, saying, “It’s always great to win these types of games.” The Sox maintained a three-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians, who beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0.

First Inning Sets the Tone

The first inning was pivotal for the Sox. After Antonacci reached on an error, he advanced to third base on a two-out double by Colson Montgomery. Andrew Benintendi then hit a soft grounder to the mound, which pitcher Griffin Jax mishandled. Jax’s throw to first was late, allowing Benintendi to reach base and Antonacci to score on the error. During Tristan Peters’ at-bat, Jax threw a pitch that bounced past the catcher, allowing Benintendi to run. However, he slowed nearing second base as the throw arrived. Rays shortstop Ben Williamson hesitated, and Montgomery scored, giving the Sox a 2-0 lead.

“It was huge,” Sox manager Will Venable noted. “Getting two runs early is a nice start. Those were tough plays for the Rays, but our players capitalized.”

Benintendi also contributed in the fourth inning with a solo home run. Everson Pereira added two more runs with a double in the sixth inning against reliever Craig Kimbrel, broadening the gap to 5-0. In the ninth, Pereira hit a two-run home run against Alex Cook.

About Pereira, Venable shared, “He wasn’t even in the original lineup. It was significant seeing him perform after late roster changes due to injuries.” Pereira reflected on the year with challenges, “This season had ups and downs, but my focus is on future opportunities.”

Vargas also hit a two-run homer in the ninth against Chris Roycroft. Starting pitcher Anthony Kay excelled by allowing seven hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking one. Kay navigated through bases-loaded situations in both the fourth and sixth innings, raising his record to 8-5.

Venable praised Kay, “Great performance, especially working through challenging moments.”

The Sox continued strong performances against top AL East teams. Winning against the Rays, who hold the best AL record, was a highlight. The Sox limited Tampa Bay to just three runs across the series. Anthony Kay said, “Winning series is crucial. Our recent performances show our league standing.”

Looking Ahead

The Sox proceed to Boston for a three-game series starting Tuesday. The team is optimistic about their form and the addition of pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners.

Vargas expressed optimism about the team’s direction, “We’ve done well in positioning ourselves favorably. Thinking about the World Series aligns the team and organization goals.”
