Cubs Players Focus on Performance Amidst Trade Deadline Pressure

Starting pitcher Colin Rea, like many in the Chicago Cubs lineup, claims he hasn’t given much thought to the looming MLB trade deadline. “I haven’t spent too much time thinking about it, me personally,” Rea stated following the Cubs’ 2-1 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday at Wrigley Field. He explained that the team is focused on taking each game as it comes.

However, the impending deadline seemed to cast a shadow over Wrigley Field. The Los Angeles Dodgers recently strengthened their team by acquiring Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, a two-time AL Cy Young Award winner. Skubal will debut against the Cubs on Tuesday.

“I didn’t have a reaction,” said Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong regarding the Skubal trade. “It’ll be exciting to face him. I haven’t faced him since last year. I admire him as a person and a competitor.”

Earlier, the Cubs traded pitcher Jameson Taillon and cash considerations to the Toronto Blue Jays. Taillon, with a 5.92 ERA, had previously been designated for assignment.

Cubs management intends to bolster the team’s pitching staff before the deadline. Crow-Armstrong expressed optimism about potential new additions. “Any addition would help. We’re already strong with the talent we have, but more would be great,” he noted.

“The reason why the deadline is maybe a little different than five years ago is you can’t add any more players,” said Craig Counsell, emphasizing the finality of current team compositions.

Despite needing reinforcement, Cubs pitchers have excelled recently. Since July 24, during a continuous play streak, their ERA stands at 2.27, second only to the Yankees. Rea demonstrated solid performance against the Yankees, allowing two runs over six innings.

Offensively, the Cubs struggled on Sunday. They managed four hits and drew six walks, but were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The defining moment came during Nico Hoerner’s sixth-inning at-bat. Hoerner, with a favorable count, chose not to challenge a called strike and was subsequently out.

“I’m sure Nico’s looked at it and wished he would have challenged,” Counsell commented. He acknowledged the complexity of decisions batters face during high-pressure moments.

The Cubs are eager to move forward. “Even tonight, we’re thinking about the Dodgers coming out tomorrow,” Rea said, focusing on the upcoming games rather than trade details.
