The poll surveyed 1,225 respondents, carrying a margin of error of +/-3.2 at the 95 percent confidence level. It found that a majority of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents advocate for major changes to the party’s leadership and strategic direction. This signals widespread eagerness for reform within the rank-and-file.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Favorability

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent progressive leader, faces a complex situation in terms of national appeal. Despite her visibility, she recorded a favorability rating of only 26 percent, while her unfavorable rating stood at 36 percent. Among adults aged 18 to 34, her favorability was slightly higher at 28 percent, while it increased to 30 percent among those aged 35 to 49.

Divided Democratic Electorate

The survey underscores a complex strategic scenario for Democrats who are grappling with their future. A notable one-third of Democrats identify as democratic socialists, pointing to the enduring influence of progressive ideology. Despite Ocasio-Cortez’s strong social media presence and fundraising capabilities, her favorability rating trails behind nationally recognized politicians who typically register positive ratings between 40 and 50 percent.

Potential Democratic Frontrunners for 2028

With the 2028 Democratic presidential race approaching, no major candidates have formally announced their campaigns. However, several figures have emerged as potential contenders. Vice President Kamala Harris has hinted at the possibility of running again, expressing her intent to Reverend Al Sharpton during the National Action Network’s annual convention.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has also suggested he might consider running, although he stated in a June 2025 interview that he is not currently focused on it. Ocasio-Cortez dismissed presidential speculation earlier this year, sharing her ambition to enact lasting change, such as single-payer healthcare and a living wage.

Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff has firmly stated that he is not planning to run for president in 2028, prioritizing his reelection in Georgia.

Implications for the Democratic Party

With the next presidential election still a couple of years away, party strategists emphasize two key imperatives. The first is satisfying a restless base that demands structural reform. The second is identifying leaders who can build consensus across the diverse Democratic coalition.
