Brandon Aiyuk’s Future with the San Francisco 49ers Remains Uncertain

Brandon Aiyuk’s unresolved status is causing tension as the San Francisco 49ers open training camp without offering any updates on his situation. The wide receiver is currently listed on the reserve/left squad list, where he has remained since the end of 2025. After missing the entire last season due to unresolved issues with the team, Aiyuk would likely need to request reinstatement from the NFL to potentially return in 2026.

There are options for Aiyuk to facilitate this process, such as reporting to training camp or notifying the 49ers of his plans to return. His relationship with the team has been strained for approximately a year.

The dispute escalated last July when San Francisco nullified the remaining guaranteed money in his contract after he failed to complete rehabilitation for his torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus.

On social media, Aiyuk has alluded to uncertainties about his future with the 49ers, intensifying public discussion on the matter. Roddy White, former wide receiver for the Falcons, recently criticized the team’s handling of Aiyuk’s injury return.

“I think the 49ers handled this situation wrongly,” White stated to Hard Rock Bet. “They should have exercised patience with Aiyuk’s circumstances and done everything possible to return him to the field, allowing him the chance to prove his capabilities in football. An angry player wanting to leave complicates any trade negotiations.”

White’s career with the Falcons ended with 10,863 regular-season receiving yards.

The recent decision by the 49ers to re-sign Deebo Samuel seemed to prompt a cryptic response from Aiyuk on Instagram, where he wrote, “San Fran wanna see a real reunion?”

Aiyuk’s social media posts have not exclusively targeted San Francisco. He also directed comments at the NFL Players Association, expressing interest in joining the Commanders. However, this prospect has reportedly diminished after critical remarks aimed at the Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Daniels, discussing their interactions last week, assured reporters that he and Aiyuk had privately resolved any tensions. They previously played together at Arizona State in 2019.

In late July, general manager John Lynch emphasized that the 49ers’ focus remains on the players currently present in camp. “Our organization will concentrate on the players who are here,” Lynch told reporters on July 25. “We wish him and his family well.”

Ricky Pearsall, who appeared promising for the 49ers’ offense after being limited to 20 games in his first two seasons, faced a setback due to renewed swelling in his right knee’s PCL. Consequently, he was moved to injured reserve on Aug. 1.

In 2024, Aiyuk participated in seven games before his injury sidelined him. Previously, he experienced the peak season of his career, amassing 1,342 receiving yards and earning second-team All-Pro honors.
