A forensic psychologist criticized prosecutors for allowing Bryan Kohberger to reshape his story following his plea agreement in the Idaho student murders case. Dr. Kris Mohandie, an expert on violent behavior, argued that the District Attorney’s office made a serious error by not requiring Kohberger to fully explain the murders as part of the deal.
Mohandie said, “It was a real mistake by the DA’s office because now we are putting the victims through all this again, without having gained any closure.” Kohberger, who accepted a deal to avoid the death penalty, is currently serving four consecutive life sentences without parole, plus ten additional years.
Last month, Kohberger filed for post-conviction relief. He claimed ineffective counsel and insisted on his innocence in the murders of University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, and Kaylee Goncalves. Despite his DNA being found at the crime scene, Kohberger insists he was misled.
Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to avoid the death penalty. Prosecutors should have demanded a full confession, even if they believed he might lie, Mohandie emphasized.
Mohandie explained, “This way, Kohberger can claim he admitted to nothing, argue terrible counsel, and have the opportunity to create countless lies.” This could allow him to challenge the case, and force the victims’ families to relive the proceedings.
The psychologist also noted Kohberger’s desire for notoriety. Mohandie attributed this to Kohberger’s personality traits, saying, “He wants to get away with things and outsmart the system. Keeping his notoriety alive is a secondary gain he seeks.” Kohberger even called a reporter from prison before filing his petition.
Dr. Mohandie urged the public to view killers like Kohberger as dangerous individuals rather than fascinating figures. “They are terrible people and monsters,” he affirmed.
